While reflecting on 2020 and life before and after covid, I wrote a poem that imagines the commute as a microcosm for the journey through this distracting life of ours.
The train is at the station
It is time you got on
Is it going your way?
Will you have your say?
Headphones in; music playing
Everybody else is staying
In their phone
You’re on your own
With strangers in a silent crowd
Heavy heads full, and loud
Of thoughts and words and song
Wondering where we belong
Is, this, our universe
A blessing, or a curse?
How are we to know?
For those of us fortunate to be able to continue working from home during the current pandemic, one challenge we are adjusting to the increasing amount of video calls we attend daily. It’s 6.30am. The alarm goes off. I hop out of bed and have a shower. I get dressed, organise my stuff and leave the house by about 7.15am. After a brisk 15 minute walk, I arrive at the train station. The train leaves at 7.45am and takes about 45 minutes to reach the city. Another 10 minute walk (stopping en route for some coffee) brings me to the office.
